Mid-day meals -An additional incentive for primary schools
immh

As the saying goes, " Today's child is tomorrow's future." Children shape the future of the country. If the child is provided with good education, food and facilities to live life with, then the child can come up to the expectation of the nation. Every Indian child is entitled to “free and compulsory education” from the age of 6 to 14. This has recently become a “fundamental right” under Article 21A of the Constitution. But what if children don't get primary education? Or don't go to the schools? It is shocking to know than at least 20 per cent of Indian children (in the 6-14 age group) are out of school. To enhance the enrollment of children in the schools for atleast primary education, mid day meals were introduced.

Scope for Fisheries Development through Farmers Participation in Meghalaya, North Eastern India.

Scientist, Sullip Kumar Majhi Division of fisheries, ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Barapani, Meghalaya, India E-Mail: sullipkm@gmail.com

Meghalaya has the potential to produce 11,623t of fish against the present level of 4,676t (Sugunan, 2001). Although the state has got limited aquatic resource, but to meet this ambitious goal, the state should focus more on integrated fish culture, paddy-cum-fish culture and polyculture of carps. According to Sugunan (2001) the fish production of Meghalaya can meet the target provided the state government should increase the pond area from 500ha to 2,400ha to produce 6,000t of fish at a yield rate of 2,500kg/ha. Similarly 5000ha have to be brought under paddy-cum-fish culture practice to produce another 3,000t of fish. Conversion of marginal beels areas in to fishery estates and efficient management of capture fisheries in the rest of the area can lead to an additional production of 731t. Yield rates from reservoirs and rivers has to be improved to 160kg/ha and 100kg/ha to achieve the targets of 1,350t and 560t, respectively from these resources.
